A tradition in big-city politics is known as “street money,” which is cash that politicians dole out in return for political support to get out the vote. California Democrats have decided to take the practice statewide and call it “inflation relief.”
Gov. Gavin Newsom and Democratic legislative leaders over the weekend announced a $300 billion budget agreement that includes $17 billion in what amounts to political relief for lawmakers. “Millions of Californians will be receiving up to $1,050 as part of a NEW middle class tax rebate,” the Governor tweeted. Street money by any other name.
